St Thomas’ Gardens

A new intermediate care facility with the addition of 68 residential units

St Thomas’ Gardens

Overview

Stockport Council acquired the former St. Thomas’ Hospital site from Homes England to create an all-age residential scheme. This will include an exemplar intermediate care scheme to support the Borough’s approach to health and social care integration.

  • 8 supported living apartments
  • 82-bed intermediate care facility
  • 68 affordable homes

About the development

St Thomas’s is delivering a mixture of 68 houses and apartments, alongside a 82-bedroom adult intermediate care facility. This innovative care facility provides intermediate support for people discharged from hospital who are not yet ready to return home, as well as those needing shortterm rehabilitation or stepup care to avoid hospital admission.By late 2025 and into 2026, the project reached major construction milestones, including the completion of the roof structure, the laying of the final slate, and the removal of scaffolding, marking significant progress in restoring the Grade II listed buildings following more than 15 years of dereliction. External works are largely complete and internal fitout works are now under way.

Vision

St Thomas’ Gardens is designed to become Stockport’s first intergenerational living environment, where health, housing and community are integrated. The new homes and care facilities will create a place that supports independence, wellbeing and connection – meeting the needs of a borough with an ageing population while offering modern, sustainable homes close to the town centre.
